It's funny you mention the puppets because that was a common complaint amongst older fans (myself included), and Abrams has specifically included puppets in this one (in addition to CGI) as an homage to the original. One of the many things I admire about Abrams is his fidelity to source material while still making it feel new and fresh. I thought Super 8 was fantastic for this reason.

Star Wars isn't sci-fi, it's fantasy/adventure.
Sci-fi is knowing the past and how we got here, looking around today and figuring out which direction we are going, and then writing a story on possible future situations based on all that.
Star Wars, of course, was set a long, long time ago, and has nothing to do with Earth or humans.
So sci-fi fans who don't like Star Wars probably don't like Lord of the Rings either.
